BMI can be used as an indicator if a person is underweight, normal or obese. However note, BMI on its own can not be used for certain to decide whether a person is underweight, normal or obese.
To decide other factors need to be considered too, as sex, age and perhaps other body measurements, like waist circumference. Pregnant women or people with some natural causes can not use BMI as a suitable measurement. Neither can athletes and body builders, as they have a bigger muscle mass percentage then normal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified weight class, or nutritional status, based on BMI for adults over 20 years old into the classes: Underweight; Normal weight; Pre-obesity and Obesity class I, II and II.
